Cretan Mandinades as Musical Poetics

Tuesday, May 4, 2021
5:00 p.m. (PST)
with Dr. Panagiotis League

If you're Cretan, you love mantinades; you've heard them sung and spoken -- and probably sung them yourself -- thousands of times, and perhaps you even come up with your own to mark a special occasion or come up with alternate lyrics to a favorite tune. But where did the mantinada come from, how is it related to other types of Cretan and Greek songs, and how does it work as poetry and as music? In this presentation, Dr. Panayotis League will answer these questions by exploring thehistory, development, and cultural context of the mantinada over the centuries. Drawing on more than two decades of research and experience performing the music and poetry of western Crete and related traditions, he will perform a wealth of musical examples to illuminate important points and share material from his own fieldwork across the island.

Dr. Panagiotis League is the Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at Florida State University and Director of Center for Music of the Americas.  He is also an Associate for Ethnomusicology and Folkloric Studies at the Center for Hellenic Studies.
