Our Philanthropic Legacy

For over nine decades, the Pancretan Association of America (PAA) has been a beacon of relief, healthcare, and hope for the people of Crete and Greece. Our work is a living reflection of philotimo—the Cretan values of honor, dignity, and selfless generosity.

A Century of Compassion

Philanthropy has been integral to the PAA since its founding in 1929. At that time, visionary Cretan immigrants united local fraternities into a national organization with a dual purpose: to preserve our rich heritage and to give back to the communities that sustained them.

From the early days of mutual aid to today’s sophisticated initiatives—including the Pancretan Philanthropic Investment Fund—our committee has overseen the contribution of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Strengthening Our Bonds

This enduring commitment does more than provide financial aid; it strengthens the vital ties between Cretan-Americans and our ancestral homeland. By upholding the values of solidarity and compassion that define Cretan culture, we ensure that the PAA continues to make a lasting difference in lives across generations.

Historic Milestones of Service

  • Greek War Relief (1940s): In the wake of World War II, PAA chapters nationwide mobilized to raise critical funds, providing a lifeline for orphaned children and families devastated by conflict.

  • The Venizelion Hospital (1948): The PAA made a historic donation of $350,000 (equivalent to over $4 million today) to establish the Venizelion Hospital in Heraklion, creating a permanent center for healing on the island.

  • Support for the "Fatherless Daughters" (Post-WWII): We provided over $120,000 in direct financial aid to young women who lost their fathers during the war, securing their well-being and helping them build stable futures.

Modern Impact: 2025 and Beyond

We continue this noble tradition through modern, groundbreaking initiatives:

  • Epilepsy Monitoring Units (2025): The PAA partnered with the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, to establish the first-ever specialized Epilepsy Monitoring Unit at the University of Heraklion Hospital (PAGNI). This is one of two Epilepsy monitoring units in Greece which provide essential diagnostic care at no charge to patients.
